Thurman Fredrick McQuaid, 79, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2018, at Bay Special Care Unit in Bay City. A Funeral Mass for Fred will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski as celebrant and Deacon Larry Fussman as homilist. Interment of his ashes will be in Calvary Cemetery followed by a meal at the Eagle’s Club. The family will receive friends at the church from 9 a.m. until the Mass begins. Memorial contributions may be made to the wishes of the family. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Fred was born February 7, 1939, in Mt. Pleasant, son of the late Thurman F. and Edwardine K. (Murphy) McQuaid. A 1957 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, Fred served in the U.S. Marines from 1957-1960. He married Virginia Pearsall on July 15, 1961, at Sacred Heart. He was employed as a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service from 1976 until his retirement in 1998. He was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Parish, a member of the Eagles Club for over 20 years, and a member of the Moose Lodge and Elk’s Lodge. Fred enjoyed golfing and was a huge sports fan. He rarely missed watching a sporting event of any Michigan team. His hat collection was one to be admired. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his family and truly loved watching his great grandchildren’s games. Fred is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughter, Ann McQuaid (Steven Skalitzky) of Remus; three grandchildren, Ryon Skalitzky, Sean Skalitzky, and Maisie McQuaid; five great grandchildren, Conner, Conner, Leena, Sean, and Marley; siblings, Edward (Robin) McQuaid of Mt. Pleasant and Susan (Jim) Graham of Battle Creek; sisters in-law, Eleanor (Bill) Quinlan of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Racilla (Larry) Ryon of Midland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Edwardine McQuaid; two sons, Michael McQuaid and Timothy McQuaid; and sisters, Cecelia McQuaid and Alice ‘Annie’ McQuaid.
