Obituary for William F. Sowle, Jr.

Bill Sowle Jr., age 86, of Mt. Pleasant, went to be with his Lord and Creator, as well as being reunited with the love of his life, Peggy Stribley Sowle on May 13, 2019. He passed away peacefully at Crestwood Assisted Living Village. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth McNeill and her fiancé, Thomas Trombley of Saginaw; son, William F. Sowle III of Indianapolis and his wife, Betsy; and two grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth McNeill and William F. Sowle, IV. Also surviving are his sisters, Ruth Anne Sowle of Mt. Pleasant and Bette Blake of Lake Orion; sisters in-law, Kathy Stribley of Syracuse, NY and Ruthie Darrah of Linden, MI; and brother in-law, Dick Stribley and his wife, Diane of San Antonio, TX. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Peggy; and his parents. Bill was born January 30, 1933, in Mt. Pleasant, son of the late William F. and Elizabeth I. Bugbee. A 1951 graduate Sacred Heart Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Bill attended Central Michigan University where he was very active in Track and Field and was in the first commissioning class of the ROTC. Upon earning his business degree from CMU in 1955, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1955-1967, and earned the rank of Captain. Bill was very proud of being in charge of the atomic cannon unit in Germany at the time of the Korean War. During his tenure with the Army, Bill married the love of his life, Margaret A. ‘Peg’ Stribley, on September 27, 1958, at St. John Church in Ypsilanti, MI. Two of Bill’s proudest accomplishments occurred in 1980 when he was named Mt. Pleasant ‘s Citizen of the Year, and named Sacred Heart’s, first ever, Alumnus of the Year. He also received numerous other awards. He took leadership roles for decades in the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Community Cancer Services, the Special Olympics, the YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, Sacred Heart Parish, and the Michigan Movers and Warehouseman’s Association, and volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels. He was the oldest and longest standing member of the Sacred Heart choir, participating for over 65 years. In 1964, Bill became the proud owner of Sidney Sowle and Son Mayflower, a company established by his grandfather. Bill retired in 2005. His most cherished accomplishment was being a great dad, husband, brother, uncle, and loyal friend to many in the community of Mt. Pleasant. The most significant lesson Bill learned during his life was how important it was to love what you do. “If you’re going to find something to do in life, try to find something that you love.” Upon his request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 15 at 10 a.m. from Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski as celebrant and Deacon Larry Fussman assisting. Following Mass, Rite of Committal will be in Calvary Cemetery with full military honors. A luncheon will take place at Sacred Heart Parish Hall. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Funeral Home, 2300 S. Lincoln Rd., Mt. Pleasant, MI, on Friday, June 14, from 4:00-7:30 p.m. with the Vigil beginning at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Cancer Services of Isabella County, P.O. Box 36, Mt.
